Fresh off a world tour with three-time Grammy-nominated Stone Sour, guitarist and songwriter Josh Rand has partnered with Peavey on his signature Custom Shop guitar, the Peavey JR™ Special.
A flattop, basswood electric guitar based on the HP™ Special, the new JR Special is outfitted with a DiMarzio PAF Joe humbucking pickup in the neck position and a DiMarzio X2N humbucker in the bridge position, with the patented Peavey Dual Compression™ tailpiece and a bolt-on maple neck.
Most striking, however, is the unique finish - the new official U.S. Army digiflage camouflage pattern with a satin finish, applied using the patented ArtGuitar® printing process and the Custom Graphics portal at www.peaveycustomshop.com.
"When I heard about what Peavey was doing with their new Custom Shop, I asked them to send me a couple of HP™ Specials, a flat top and a carved top," said Rand. "They sounded great and they felt great, and the construction was awesome. My tech and I were impressed, and I started discussing doing a signature model with Peavey.
"With my signature model I wanted certain things altered from the traditional HP model. My JR Special is the first model to have a reversed headstock, and its neck dimensions are customized to what is most comfortable for me.
"I also had it wired for two volume controls, one for the front and one for the back, with a 3-way pickup switch."
The inspiration for the guitar's digiflage graphics came late one night while Rand winded down from a Stone Sour gig.
"It was one o'clock in the morning and this program came on about a soldier who lost both legs from a grenade," he said. "It made me think about how some guys go to war and come back missing limbs, and they're changed forever.
"I thought it would be cool to give up part of the profit from my guitar to these guys. It came together really quickly after that - like it was supposed to be that way. So now we're going to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project."
